Groundwork is the site preparation everything else stands on: clearance, excavation, footings, drainage and compacted bases, done in the right order by one person who owns the whole sequence.
Steve runs the dig with his own compact machines, handles the spoil as part of the job, and hand-finishes the corners and levels a bucket cannot reach. The site is handed over ready for the bricklayer, the builder or the next stage of your garden.

What Steve handles
- Site clearance and levelling: vegetation, old slabs and buried rubble out, ground graded ready to build on
- Footings and foundations dug to the drawings, corners squared, bottoms cleaned for the pour
- Drainage, soakaways and French drains cut to depth with the falls right first time
- Trenching for cables, pipes and ducts, cut clean and backfilled properly
- Compacted sub-bases for driveways, patios, sheds and garden rooms
- Muck away planned into the job from day one, grab lorry or skip, not bolted on at the end

How a groundwork job runs
Every groundwork job starts the same way: Steve walks the site, checks the access route, looks at the ground and works out where the spoil will go. The quote lands after that visit, with the scope, the dates and the muck away written down.
On the day, the digger and dumper arrive on the trailer and the dig follows the drawings, not guesswork. Machine work does the heavy lifting; the corners, edges and levels that decide whether the next trade has an easy day are finished by hand.
If the ground throws up a surprise, old footings, a hidden service run, waterlogged clay, you hear about it straight away with options, not after the fact.
The job ends with the site cleared, the paving washed off and a walk-round with you. Bricklayers and builders get ground they can start on the same day.
