Why the dig matters most
Every sunken driveway, rocking block and puddle you have ever seen is a sub-base problem. The surface gets all the attention, but the dig decides the lifespan: how deep the old ground came out, what went back in, and how well each layer was compacted before the next one landed.
Steve digs to the depth the ground actually needs, which around here often means getting below soft clay rather than stopping at a tidy-looking level. Hardcore goes in and gets compacted in layers, not dumped in one load, because layers are what carry a car for twenty years.
Water gets a plan too. A new hard surface needs somewhere to send rain, so falls, channel drains and soakaways are designed before the dig, not after the first storm.
